Photographers Comment: This
market is said to be the largest in West Africa, possibly the world. Made up of
a maze of alleyways with odd shaped stands its impossible to even guess how many
stalls there are. Within the
market is a two storey piece known as the recycling centre, where a lot of
hammering is going on, making new goods from old materials. From one side of
this you can get a view over the market, and it goes just about as far as you
can see in all directions. I was able to take photos with a 180 degree view
(10.5 modified or special fisheye) and take out of this a 120 degree true
wide angle shot. Also using a 12mm lens get a 90 degree coverage shot. The only
better view you could get would be with a helicopter.
Taking views within the market is difficult as
working distance is short and there are a lot of people in all walkways.
If I had more time in this market,
besides being able to explore more of it, I would like to take more shots of
individual stalls and some, like the ones selling glass beads, are very colourful,
but you would need to wait until there was a gap in the people. The recycling
centre is also interesting providing the scope for a photojournalistic
series of images showing the steps from a scarp piece of material to a shinny
new finished product. |
