Kakum National Park - Rain Forest

Photographers Comment: The climb from the entrance up to where you start to explore the park is steep although not particularly steep, it goes on for a long way. Then it is undulating while under the canopy before going on the canopy walk made up of 7 bridge links over 120ft in the air.

While on the ground you see quite a lot of butterflies, and a variety of different trees and plant types. On the canopy walk I saw butterflies, a couple of lizard like creatures and birds from some way off. Looking down over the top of trees you cannot see what is below them.

There is other wildlife but probably in other parts of the park, including forest elephants, a breed smaller than the African elephants found in open places.

Ideally you need two camera bodies one set up for photographing butterflies which perch and then fly on, and another for more general shots. I did not photograph any of the butterflies, although I saw a number of different types, some quite large. You cannot follow the butterflies here.

There is scope if you are fit enough, to go further into this park in search of a range of other animals from monkeys to elephants, but you would need a local guide. To get a good selection of butterflies you would probably get the best results if you took along plants that would attract them.
